Shenzhen — Where the Drone Industry Was Born

Shenzhen's drone dominance grew directly from its electronics manufacturing ecosystem. The Huaqiangbei commercial district — already home to the world's largest electronics wholesale market — provided the component supply chain that DJI and hundreds of other drone manufacturers needed: flight controllers, motors, ESCs, LiPo batteries, cameras, transmission systems, and carbon fibre frames. DJI (大疆), founded in Shenzhen in 2006 by Frank Wang (汪滔), grew from a small apartment operation in Huaqiangbei into the world's largest drone company, now controlling approximately 70% of the global consumer drone market. DJI's flagship store at OCT Harbour, Nanshan, covers nearly 4,000 square metres and features an integrated DJI Park with a test-flight tower. DJI is also building a new global R&D headquarters at Shenzhen Bay — a 2-million-square-foot facility representing the largest drone infrastructure investment in history.

China's Low-Altitude Economy — The Next Trillion-Yuan Industry

The Chinese government has formally designated the "low-altitude economy" (低空经济) as a strategic national priority. This encompasses commercial drones, urban air mobility, air taxis, and drone delivery systems operating below 1,000 metres. China's low-altitude economy exceeded 500 billion CNY in 2023 and is expected to reach the trillion CNY level by 2025. The 2025 Shenzhen International Low-Altitude Economy and UAV Industry Expo takes place November 14–16 at the Shenzhen International Convention and Exhibition Center (Bao'an Hall). Drone delivery has already been commercialised — Meituan's delivery drones completed over 200,000 orders in 2024 alone.
